COME CELEBRATE WITH US!
Every year NQAPIA honors groups and leaders who have improved the lives of LGBTQ APIs. This year,
we will honor these Community Catalyst Awardees:
There will be cocktails, a 10-course Chinese banquet dinner, and dancing. All proceeds benefit NQAPIA and local LGBT API leaders to attend the National LGBT API Leadership Summit and Training in 2019. Tickets will not be sold at the door.
Please refrain from wearing scented lotions, perfumes, colognes, etc. to make the space more accommodating for folks who are sensitive to scents. This event is wheelchair accessible!
What do you need or want so you can be fully present? Contact us with any accessibility questions and concerns at conor@nqapia.org.
HONOREE PROFILES
Thanushka (Thanu) Yakupitiyage is a Sri Lankan-born, Thailand-raised, Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary immigrant rights & climate justice advocate, cultural organizer, & DJ who performs under the name Ushka. Yakupitiyage has worked as a storyteller and organizer in the immigrant rights movement for a decade and now does intersectional work in climate justice. She previously was the communications director at the New York Immigration Coalition and currently leads U.S. communications at 350.org. She believes that political work and movement building must at its core be intersectional in order to succeed.
As a DJ, she’s known for her genre-blending style across electronic club and bass music that deliberately traverses borders, creating soundscapes that reflect the immigrant experience in global migrant cities. Since 2013 to 2018, Ushka ran a QT/POC and immigrant-centered global club party called iBomba. She uses DJing and cultural organizing as a means of crafting intentional spaces and fostering community building. She works and performs with a wide community of DJs and producers with the philosophy that artistic and cultural production, at its best, is a collaborative process.
She is currently the NYU A/P/A Institute's Artist-In-Residence and she is producing new artistic work for The Shed NY. You can find her work at thanushka.com, and on social media at @ty_ushka.
The ASIAN WOMEN GIVING CIRCLE (AWGC) is the first and largest giving circle in the nation led by Asian American women. We believe culture is an essential part of any strategy for social change. We raise funds to support Asian American women-led projects in NYC that use arts and culture to bring about progressive social transformation, raise awareness and catalyst action around critical issues that affect Asian American women, girls, and families, and promote women's central role as leaders, creators, developers, and managers of projects. Learn more about the Asian Women Giving Circle here.
